Why gates sag
All of a gate's weight hangs off two or three hinges on one post. Over time one of three things gives: the hinge post leans toward the gate, the frame racks into a parallelogram, or the hinges loosen. Look at the gap between the gate and the latch post. Wider at the top means the hinge post is leaning; a gate that's out of square on its own needs bracing.
What a gate repair usually involves
- Re-hang on heavy-duty hinges with longer exterior screws or through-bolts.
- Anti-sag kit: a cable and turnbuckle corner to corner, pulling the frame square.
- Rebuild the frame with a proper diagonal brace from the bottom of the hinge side up to the latch side.
- Replace the hinge post, often the real culprit on older gates; steel is common here.
- Build a new gate to match the fence when the old one is rotted or warped past saving.
Pool gates
A gate in a pool or spa barrier should swing closed and latch by itself every time. If yours sticks, drags, or needs a push, get it fixed soon. Latch height, swing direction, and hardware can be covered by local code, so say it's a pool gate when you request an estimate.
Metal and double drive gates
Wrought iron and steel gates fail differently: broken welds, rusted hinge pins, bent frames. Wide double gates for RV or trailer access need a center drop rod and very solid posts. Mention the gate type and width when you reach out. Motorized openers are a separate specialty, so say if yours is automatic.
What gate repair usually costs
Gate repairs run about $100–$400 per gate in national guides (Angi), more if the hinge post has to be replaced. A new gate built to match the fence costs more than re-hanging the old one.

Gate Repair: common questions
Can a sagging gate be fixed, or does it need to be replaced?
Most can be fixed with heavier hinges, an anti-sag cable, a new diagonal brace, or a new hinge post. Replacement makes sense when the gate frame itself is rotted.
Why won't my gate latch anymore?
Almost always a small sag on the hinge side, which moves the latch out of line. Fixing the sag, rather than moving the latch, keeps it from coming back.
Do you handle metal and wrought iron gates?
Wood gates are the most common request, but metal gate repairs such as hinges, latches, and bent frames can be arranged. Mention the material so the request goes to a contractor who handles it.
