Which part of the fence failed?

Why wood fences here wear out where they do
East Contra Costa gets long, hot summers and a wet winter. Wood swells in the rain and shrinks in the heat, which works nails loose and opens cracks. Afternoon wind leans on solid fences, and in a lot of yards the sprinklers hit the boards every day, so the bottom edge rots first. When it isn't worth repairing
If most of the posts are soft, most of the boards split when you fasten into them, or the fence is past 15–20 years and failing in several places at once, you'd be paying to patch something that will keep failing. Yes. Replacing individual boards or a single section is one of the most common repairs. New boards won't match weathered wood right away; staining helps them blend in.
Why is only the bottom of my fence rotting?
The bottom edge stays wet longest: it's closest to soil, mulch, and sprinkler spray. A kickboard along the bottom takes that abuse instead and can be replaced cheaply later.
Nails or screws for fence repair?
Exterior-rated screws hold much better than nails as wood swells and shrinks through the seasons. Most repairs use coated or stainless screws.
